South Region

#37 Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils over #16 George Mason Patriots - For a brief moment, I thought that the short story “The Devil and Daniel Webster” might save the Patriots from our fire-throwing Bayou Beelzebub. Alas Daniel Webster was born at the tail end of the Revolutionary War and thus could not really qualify as being a Patriot in the strictest sense of the word.
#9 Miami Hurricanes over #25 Stetson Hatters - Making the Second Round is an unbelievable run for the Hatters.
#20 Vanderbilt Commodores over #4 Arkansas Razorbacks - The sword does in the hog.
#5 Furman Paladins over #12 North Florida Ospreys - And the sword, shield, armor, and horse does in the bird (not that it would all be needed).
#6 Tennessee Volunteers over #22 Arkansas State Red Wolves - Tennessee is the Volunteer State in part because of those who volunteered to fight in the War of 1812 and Mexican-American War. Thus this type of individual could take on a wolf.
#19 UAB Blazers over #3 Florida Gators - My kids like Pokémon a fair amount and the Gator seems like the first stage of a Pokémon evolution with the Blazer being its final form.
#10 North Carolina Tar Heels over #26 Florida A&M Rattlers - I briefly considered going the other way, but I think a person could win out over a snake.
#31 Longwood Lancers over #15 Wake Forest Demon Deacons - I finally looked it up and a lancer was a solider of a cavalry regiment who was armed with a lance or a spear. I may have underestimated the Lancers.

East Region

#34 Canisius Golden Griffins over #17 La Salle Explorers - An Explorer would absolutely come upon a Golden Griffin and it would absolutely lose to a flying lion-eagle.
#24 Army Black Knights over #25 Navy Midshipmen - It’s Army-Navy! And I’m suddenly worried about my pick. This does not reflect on either the Army or the Navy. I just think a knight would be really tough to take on in battle.
#4 Penn State Nittany Lions over #13 Delaware Fighting Blue Hens - Second Round is a heck of a run for a chicken too.
#21 Marshall Thundering Herd over #28 Niagara Purple Eagles - Google tells me that an eagle could not kill a single buffalo so taking out a herd seems highly unlikely.
#6 Hofstra Pride over #22 UMBC Retrievers - In an ideal world, the pride of lions would adopt the retrievers as one of their own.
#3 Rutgers Scarlet Knights over #14 Stony Brook Seawolves - There are quite a few varieties of knights making noise in this tournament.
#26 LIU Sharks over #10 Siena Saints - I know the Saints beat the Dragons in the last round, but I also had Sharks beating St. Bonaventure look week. I feel like I need to be consistent.
#15 UMass Minutemen over #2 Providence Friars - The shocking Saints over Dragons upset aside, it has not been a good tournament for men of the cloth.

Midwest Region

#33 Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons over #17 Notre Dame Fighting Irish - Look at the Fighting Irish logo. He’s defending himself with just his fists. Is that going to save you against a Mastodon? I think not.
#9 Oklahoma Sooners over #25 Southern Illinois Salukis - Sooners are people who such into the Oklahoma Territory before they were supposed to in order to claim land.
#29 Oakland Golden Grizzlies over #13 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers - Grizzly versus Muppet. Stuffing everywhere.
#12 Indiana Hoosiers over #28 Kansas City Roos - Mascot Madness makes you google things like “Can a kangaroo kill a human?” There is only one case of it happening on record (1936 in New South Wales) so the odds are in the Hoosier’s favor.
#22 Northern Kentucky Norse over #27 Youngstown State Penguins - Penguins are a great mascot. Who doesn't like penguins?
#14 Tulsa Golden Hurricane over #3 Creighton Bluejays - I just realized in this Region, we are likely going to have an interesting showdown…
#26 Iowa State Cyclones over #10 Xavier Musketeers - …between a hurricane and a cyclone. Because of the domination of natural disasters in Mascot Madness, this has become quite a rivalry.
#15 Indiana State Sycamores over #2 Dayton Flyers - A tree advancing to the Third Round? I can hardly believe it myself. My thinking is the only shot the flyer has at defeating the tree is flying into the tree. Sycamores are strong and if the old barnstorming plane doesn’t take it out in that first run, it’s got nothing left.

West Region

#33 New Orleans Privateers over #17 New Mexico Lobos - Several wolves going down in this round too.
#25 Hawaii Rainbow Warriors over #24 North Dakota Fighting Hawks - Birds too.
#13 Montana Grizzlies vs. #4 Arizona State Sun Devils - In the First Round, I posited that a demon adjacent character might have a harder time with a wild animal than a human. Same goes here. I don’t care if the Sun Devil has a pitchfork. Put an angry grizzly side-by-side with the Arizona State mascot. Who wins that fight?
#12 California Golden Bears over #5 Texas Longhorns - Tomorrow in Round 3: Bear vs. Bear!
#27 UTRGV Vaqueros over #22 Cal State Northridge Matadors - I’m giving the Spanish cowboy the nod here because of the weapons that each competitor wields.
#19 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos over #3 Colorado Buffaloes - Mañana in Round 3: Cowboy vs. Cowboy!
#26 San Diego Toreros over #23 UTEP Miners - I mentioned yesterday that the Miners would have a pick axe. The Torero has a sword called the “Estoques de Torero.” Advantage: Torero.
#2 San Diego State Aztecs over #15 TCU Horned Frogs - Kind of anticlimactic end to the day.

Check back tomorrow for the Third Round!
